Montessori Teacher Training

The Montessori training program at Green River Community College focuses on the 3-6 year-old.  It is based on the philosophy and method of Dr Maria Montessori who developed a set of learning materials that focused on sequential steps of learning.  In the Montessori Method, the role of the teacher is primarily one of observer and facilitator.  To learn more about the Montessori Method of Education go to the following links:

An Introduction to Montessori Philosophy & Practice

THE MONTESSORI "METHOD" of bringing up and educating children

Intro to Montessori - ECE 211 This beginning section introduces the student to the Montessori Method and philosophy with lessons in Practical Life, Sensorial, and Art/Music curriculum for the preschool child.  An excellent preparation for the student who plans to assist or who is already assisting in a Montessori classroom.  Also recommended for non-Montessori teachers who wish to incorporate Montessori materials into their traditional classrooms.
Montessori 2 - ECE 212 Montessori lessons focus on Mathematics and Language Arts.  The phonetic reading method is taught as well as whole language and emergent literacy approaches.  The "Math their Way" method is incorporated into the Montessori math.  An excellent opportunity for trained Montessori teachers who wish to brush up on their skills as well as those continuing on from the Intro to Montessori class.
Montessori 3 - ECE 213 The completion of the academic portion of Montessori teacher training focuses in on the cultural subjects.  Like Montessori 2, this section is excellent for trained Montessori teachers who wish to brush up on the method, make materials, and prepare for the coming school year.
Montessori Summer Intensive A one-week summer intensive is scheduled in late August. Students may take this class at the beginning or at the end of their Montessori training.
Montessori Practicum The Montessori practicum involves three separate courses consisting of classroom practice in the college Montessori lab school. With instructor permission, a portion of the hours may be completed elsewhere. The children range in age from 3-6 years.
Montessori Certification
34 Credits
To earn the Montessori certificate, students must successfully complete EDEC 110 Child Development, all three Montessori courses, a one-week summer intensive and the practicum courses, totaling 34 credits.

Employment Outlook

Employment opportunities for Montessori-trained individuals are good.  Graduating students work in a variety of schools in the area, some opening their own programs in the home or center.  Pay range varies greatly depending on each individual's skills, experience, and additional ECE background.  Students report making between $9.50 and $15.00 per hour - higher for those who set up their own programs or who have a 4-year degree in addition to their Montessori training.  The Early Childhood Department offers assistance in job placement and currently has a 100% placement record.

After Training Support

Graduating students may attend selected Saturday workshops during the coming school year at no additional cost (other than lab materials).  In addition, they may arrange to sit in on lectures and demonstrations or to practice with materials as needed.

Cost

The state of Washington contributes to the cost of students' education through support of basic instructional cost.  In addition, students must purchase notebook files, textbooks, and supplies for material-making.
