Instructor Profiles

John Avery has been a GRCC ESL instructor in the Language, Academic Skills, and Wellness Division since 1993. While a faculty member,  he has revised parts of the ESL curriculum for the college, and has assisted Washington State Office of Adult Literacy in setting competencies of teaching and learning technology competencies for basic skills students.  John served as President of WAESOL and is actively involved in conference planning and presenting on the state, national, and international levels. He is now writing a student book for the Houghton Mifflin Company on reading and is the Chair of the Instructional Council for Green River. Previously, he taught in Saudi Arabia, California, Oregon, and Wisconsin. His teaching at GRCC has focused on the use of computers in language learning and reading in a foreign language. He enjoys hiking, gardening, relaxing with family, and living in the Northwest.

M.A. in English/TESOL from Portland State University; M.S. in Education from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.
