Winter 1999 Technology Assisted Language Learning Class Biographies

My name is Haeng Sook. I am from Korea. I came to America on June 27, 1998 with my husband and three children. Now I live in Federal Way. I came to America for a new life and my children's education. I want to get a good job at the post office. My daughter and my husband are also students at Green River College.

My name is Irina. I am from Ukraine. I came to America in 1992 and now I live in Renton. I came to America for the experience of a new country. I hope to become successful in this country by accomlishing knowledge in a field that I'm seeking. I left my country because I wanted to learn more about other countries by living in them. I am blessed to have my family near me, no matter where I am. Life is full of disappointments but there's drama in them, that's why life is sweet.

I am Emiliya. I am from Almaty city, Kazakhstan. It is a central Asian country. My mother and my brother live with his family in Almaty now. In Kazakhstan I worked as a pediatrician doctor for 10 years. The first 5 years I worked in a special kindergarden. It was hard to work with orphan children and it was the best school of experience for me.
I arived in America 3.5 months ago. I like American life, but sometime I have conversation problems. I have sudied English at GRCC only 1.5 months,but my English is already better

My name is Lyudmila. I am from Ukraine. My two daughters and I came to America on December 25, 1995. It was Christmas and everything looked beautiful.

My first day at G.R.C.C. I was nervous because I didn't know how to speak English. In my class we all came from different countries. We are studying the same subject, ”English as a Second Language”. So, I spent my time in school. Now, I know how to speak English.

I have been here for about three years. I like American people because they act and speak nicely, but not all people are like that. I like America, but I really miss everything; my friend, my job, my country. I don't know why.

My name is Mariya. I am from Ukraine. I got married there and had three children. My oldest son is 14. Also I have two daughters; one is 12 and the second is 10. They attend school and speak English very well. They speak to me in English. It is good practice for me, but I don't let them forget Ukrainian language. They are reading Ukrainian books.

Now we live in Kent. My husband is working, and I am taking classes. From 1996 -1998 I was worked, because my husband was taking classes. I want to take cashier training and be a vendor.

My name is Nina. I am from Vladivostok city. Vladivostok is on the edge of Russia. My husband is American and I came to America five months ago. I have no children. I would like to have

children. It is my dream. I think I can be a good mother for my kids. I like to take care of my husband. He is a wonderful person. His family lives in Poulsbo. Now it is my family too. I'm very lucky, because I have a great new family.

My name is Stacy. I am from Korea. About 10 years ago, I was married and then immigrated with my husband. At that time, we were two, me and my husband, but now I have children and good neighbors. My husband is a dental lab technician. He has his own business. My sons are in first and third grades. They keep me really busy. Sometimes they make me happy, sometimes they give me a headache. I want to improve my English because I live in America and I need a good job. Green River Community College gives me lots of chances to learn English, to learn about computers and to make new friends. I enjoy living in America. This country has beautiful nature. In the summer time, my family goes camping, hiking and fishing. In the winter time, we go skiing. I am a housewife right now, but I will learn more English so I can find a new job. Eight years ago I worked in a Korean exchange bank at the Seattle branch. I have that experience, that was a Korean bank but right now I want to be working in an American bank.

My name is Young Rhee. I am from Korea. I came to America four years ago and now I live in Kent. I am married and I have two daughters. I will go the Art Institute so I can get a job. I like decorating everything and I like to so special table settings and table decorations. I often go to the book store. I get a lot of ideas there. My dream is to have a program like Martha Stewart's.

My name is Hyo Won. This means beautiful woman. I came from South Korea about three years ago. I live in Federal Way with my family. My husband and I have two children.

When I lived in my country, I liked to played tennis, to bowl, and to swim with my friends. Now I can't do those things because I don't have a lot of friends and they are working everyday. In America women are busy more than Korean women. I'm a Christian and I love God. God made everything in the world and loves us. I joined a prayer club in America. We pray everyday for the members and we meet one time for each month. When we met, we bring special food for a potluck. I love this club.

My name is Juan and I was born in Mexico City in 1971. When I was in Mexico I studied in High School. When I was almost finished my Mom died. That was in 1988 and at that time I decide to come to America. Living and working in Mexico was to hard for me at that time so I came to Long Beach California. It was hard for me because I didn't have friends to stay with. A married couple from San Salvador helped me. Their names were Walter Santos and Alba Santos. Thanks to them I'm here, other wise I would be in Mexico. At that time I lived with them, then I told my sister to come to America and right now she lives in Utah with her husband, and my brother. When I first lived in America I didn't study English. I did a lot of traveling. Now I want to improve my English and to see many different cultures. At Green River, I have met Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and South America people. I also have I made a lot friends on the internet. Right now I'm studying English and preparing for my technical career. When I finish I would like to travel to Canada and Spain

My name is Tanya. Originally I am from Ukraine. I have a small family. We came to America together with my husband's family a few years ago. We arrived in Washington State. At first we lived in Wenatchee on the east side of Washington. A few months later, my family moved to Seattle, but my husband's family still lives in Wenatchee. I like the Northwest very much. Its green forests and beautiful lakes sometimes reminds me of the place in my country where I spent my childhood. We have good opportunities here to study the English language and to have a good life. My daughter is going to Elementary School. She likes everything here very much.

My name is Nami. I have been in Seattle since 1992. I have two kids and they are in elementary school now and during this time I can come to Green River Community College. I took citizenship class last year. I passed the test and interview. I'm going to make my oath on March 26, 1999. It took sixteen months to get it. It's getting harder to get citizenship and the cost is higher now.

My name is Luis I'm from Mexico City. I came to the USA in 1990. I lived in California for more than seven years. When I was living there, my mom came twice a year to visit me. There are nine members in my family; eight girls and only one boy - ''POOR ME''! All my sisters are in Mexico, and almost all of them got married. Now I have more than sixteen nephews. I would like to go back to Mexico, but I'll wait two more years.
I'm not married, but I feel happy, because I have a nice girlfriend. About my work I also feel happy, because it is easy work. I have some friends there, and some of them are so funny with me. I like this State, because the weather is cold, I don't like California's hot weather.
