My home country is Cheju Island in South Korea.  I was born there, and grew up until I graduated from high school.  When I went to the University in Seoul, I left from Cheju Island.  I lived in Seoul until I left for the U.S.A.  My mom and a younger sister are still living there. In the future, I want to go back and live with my family there. Because there are lots of beautiful places, and there was not environmental pollution.  Also the island people are very friendly.

Cheju Island is known as a place of fantasy and mystery. It is the most beautiful Island in Korea, and is located in the southwest sea of the Korean peninsula. Cheju Island is also known as a Mecca for honeymooners. The island’s sightseeing spots are often crowded with young couples.

In the center of this island, there is the Halla mountain, which is a volcano.  On seashore of this island; there are lots of beautiful places-Sungsan’s Sunrise Peak, Mt Sanbang, Chunjeyun Waterfall, Chungbang Waterfall.

Cheju Island is called “SAMDADO”-it means that this island has "three-plenty".  The three plenty are stones, winds, and women.  Houses and fields have stonewalls around them to protect them from the strong sea winds (See picture 5).  Along the shoreline the women dive for shellfish.  One in five people get their incomes from the sea. Also in many families the women support the family.

Cheju Island also has "three- lacks".  Three lacks are beggars, thieves, and locks.  Even though the islanders are poor, they live helping each other.  So thieves and beggars are not on the island.  Because there are no thieves, islanders rarely lock their doors. The front house gates is made of three logs between two standing stones, which are named "Jungnang". These gates allows people to pass but no animals e.g. cows, horses (See picture 5)
