The lunar calendar has been used since the early, but these days we use both the lunar and the solar calendar. Many of the old people still keep their birthday or something by the lunar calendar, but young people feel inconvenience for using it. That’s why they don’t use it anymore. Some of the holidays have been decided by the lunar calendar such as New Year, Buddha’s birthday and Harvest Moon Festival. But Koreans celebrate both the lunar New Year and the solar New Year. The most important holidays in Korea are New Year and Harvest Moon Festival, when highways are jammed with families visiting their hometown. On those days, we make a lot of food, set the table, and hold a memorial service for the ancestors. And then we visit graves and bow in order to pay respects and memories. Whole family and relatives gets together at the oldest son’s house and has a good time. These are the biggest traditional holidays in Korea. |
