Green River Community College English as a Second Language Student Stories - Winter, 2002

My Story

My name is Pham, An Nguyen Ngoc. I came from Vietnam. My language is Vietnamese. I arrived in the United States of America on March 20, 2001. Now, I live in Auburn with my family. All my family lives here. My parents have four sons, one daughter-in-law, and one nephew.

Before I went to the U.S., I lived in Ho Chi Minh City. I like my city because it is a beautiful and friendly place. But I had less opportunity for my education and my work. Coming to the U.S. was my dream, and it is true now. I am very thankful to the U.S., which gives me a chance to reunite with my family and do what I want to do.

Since I have been here, I have had a lot of things to do for my new life. I want to get a better job and a higher education. But, my big challenge is my English. Sometimes, I don't understand everything that people say. I am very embarrassed when I speak to another people. Therefore, my first duty is to improve my English. I plan to do it right now. I try to go to school daily and practice my English skills a lot, etc. I hope my English will be better soon.

In the future, I want to enroll in the college and be a networking engineer. I am interested in computation and telecommunications. I hope I will have a happy life, a good job, and live my American Dream.
