Vocabulary of the computer - main page

 

The tower or main part of the computer. It contains the drives, the cpu or the "thinking" part of the computer, and the connections for all the cables. Click for details The monitor. It is like a television, but it doesn't usually show TV signals.  The keyboard. This is the part like a typewriter. It lets you put (or input) words, and numbers into the computer. The CD drive. CD's contain many programs, such as Inform and Encarta. You cannot save to the CD drive. Click here for more details. The Zip drive. A Zip drive is used to save very large files. It holds 100 megabytes. Usually these are used for pictures. Click for more details.  The floppy disk drive. A floppy disk is used to save smaller files such as word processing files. It holds about 1.2 megabytes. You will have a floppy to keep in your folder for the whole quarter. You have to be very careful in how you use a floppy. The mouse. The computer mouse is used to move the cursor around on the monitor and for many other functions. This mouse has three buttons and a wheel to make actions faster. Click for more details. The printer. The printer is connected to all the computers in the classroom. It makes a paper copy of what is on your computer. Some printers are in black and white and others are in color. The scanner. The scanner can be used together with your teacher to take pictures and other images and make it so they can be put into the computer.  When your images are in the computer, you can put them in a story, email them to friends, and put them in many documents.
