The TALL Classroom Photos
The ESL program at Green River Community College has a class for students who want to learn how about computers and other kinds of technology. We call it the Technology Assisted Language Learning class, or the TALL class. The number in the course schedule is ESL 055. The room layout is a combination of three different approaches. There are two rows, two islands of four stations each, and an open mixed middle area which contains a rectangular table and round table with no equipment. Auxiliary equipment, such as the printers and the scanner are kept on the outside edge of the room. All stations are oriented towards the front so students can see the teacher and the projection screen. Here are some photos from the TALL classroom.

| From the teacher's station. Note the island stations of four computers. | A closer view of the two islands. The configuration naturally groups students and allows room to work in groups. |

| The left side or row of computers. This area is the least oriented to the front of the room. The classroom came with a fixed counter, which we had to use as it is. Unfortuantely, the students are facing away from the center of the room. | The right side or row of computers. The innovation here was to pull the stations away from the wall and turn them around so students are not looking at the wall, but toward the center and front of the classroom. There is also space behind the stations so teacher can circulate behind to check student work. |

| This view is from the front of the center of the room where there are tables without computers. These areas are used for whole class sessions, viewing videos over the projection system, and for conversation groups. The rectangular table has plug-ins for tape recorders. | This view is the opposite of the one to the left. It is from the back to the front of the room. The teacher's station is in the front right and the open area is in the middle. A drop-down projection screen is often lowered (in front of the clock!) and students can view the instructor's monitor on the big screen. |
