 WEEK 7 HOMEWORK
The homework sheet was passed out
Tuesday:
1.    Make sure that your paper has a concise, precise, debatable, opinionated statement (not a fact).
2.    Have 6-8 varied sentence beginnings (refer to Chapter 21). Make sure that you underline these beginning words.
3.    Have 3-4 logically placed transitions (italicize these words)
4.    Have sentence variety – see Chapter 21 - now using coordination and subordination plus conjunctive adverbs – p. 365 and interrupters.
5.    Double underline active verbs that have replaced the passive verb constructions: is are, was, were, be, being, been
6.    Italicize any relative pronouns or subordinating words (who/whom, which, where, when, while, that, or the word, to. These are words that you use in place of and or when combining sentences and deleting repeated words.

DISCUSSION IN CLASS TO HELP WITH HOMEWORK TO BE HANDED IN ON TUESDAY
Examples of varying sentences:

1.    “The kids are walking to school.” This is a passive construction. The verb, “are”, is a passive verb. Circle it. Passive is weak. Circling these verbs tells you that you are using these verbs too much. Reduce these verbs by 1/3. Example to revise this sentence: “The kids run, skip, hop, jump, climb trees, ride bikes.” “The kids climbed trees while they walked to school.” “The kids jumped in puddles while walking to school.” “The kids staggered, wandered, sauntered, zig-zagged, meandered to school.” Circle “to be” verbs and put in various shades of color: olive green, vanilla yellow, etc.
2.    Use interrupters. Italicize any relative pronouns or subordinating words.
3.    Use summary as a way to write articles.

[I live] in the state of Washington.
[Washington is] the Evergreen State.
[We have] mountains, lakes, oceans, and prairies.

Take out draft – any draft that you have
Receiving a paper back 2nd or 3rd time – chance to make paper better
Bracket first 2 words of every single sentence: look at the examples:
[I live] in the state of Washington.
[Washington is] the Evergreen State.
[We have] mountains, lakes, oceans, and prairies.

1.    This makes you aware of how many times you are using the same words. Makes you aware of how many times you are repeating the same words. Example: We went hiking. With anticipation, we went hiking.
2.    P. 365 – Look at sentence options. We now have the interrupter.
3.    Circle “to be” verbs. Now do c/d: combine and delete unnecessary and repeated words. IC.Ic.IC. Write above in a more interesting way.
4.    Eliminate is, are, was, were, be, being, been.
5.    Use with, to, which, that, who, where, when, while, fanboys (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
Living in the green state of Washington,
Having so much rain, Washington is the evergreen state. What is the subject: living.
When combining sentences, need to eliminate repeated words.
“Living in the evergreen state of Washington and having so much rain allows us to sleep all day.”

Do brackets, underline, streamline.
Box and eliminate every “and”. Also, do this with the to be verbs and put them at the bottom of the page. Come up with more creative words.

Replace “and” with:  to, with, which, that, who, where, when, while, period, semicolon, fanboys. Get rid of “ands” any way possible.
Example: “Imagine waking up in the morning to find out…..” instead of “Imagine waking and finding out…..”
Example: “How hard it is to wake up and find…” change to “ How hard it is to wake up only to find…”

Now use the word where – location, when – time, while – time. Don’t start a sentence with the word, where.
Example: “I live in the evergreen state of Washington where we have mountains, lakes, oceans, and prairies.”

Example: “My friends are nice and generous people. They give much of their time to community service.” Change to: “My friends, who are nice and generous people, give much of their time to community service.” Or ‘My friends are nice, generous people, who give much of their time to community service.”
