NOTE TAKING
You will be practicing note taking and summary skills while watching the two films, “Obama’s Speech” and “For the Bible Tells Me So”.

“Cornell Method of Note Taking”
Refer to the handout given in class.
•	2” margin to the left: used for recall
•	2” margin on the bottom: used for questions to ask teacher or possible test questions
•	*space to the right of the 2” margin: used for your in class notes
•	*Indent to indicate minor ideas. This is a quick way to tell you what is not as important.
•
When moving from one key idea to the next key idea: you know this by transition or signal words. Look on the back of this article for these transition words.

You will never be able to write word for word when taking notes. To save time, abbreviate words, ideas. Listen to the idea and put down the idea in as few words as possible – simplest expression. Write furiously.

Here are some abbreviations that can help you in taking notes. Use these or create your own:
•	increase decrease: < >
•	+= add
•	& = and
•	#= number
•	@ = at
•	arrows up and down = important or not important
•	triangle = change
•	arrow to left = leads to
•	1/hr= per
•	w/ = with
•	/ = per
•	w/o = without
•	b/c = because
•	b/4 = before
•	Triangle with 3 dotes = therefore
•	w/I = within
•	re: = regarding or about
•	inf = information
•	k within a circle = knowledge
•	v= vocabulary
•	in Obama’s talk R can stand for race
•	RR = race relations
•	In anatomy class MS can stand for muscular skeletal
•	Ex = example
•	‘g = a word ending in ing: example: revol’tzig (revolutionizing)
•	x = time
•	arrow to the left, with date above it = since

Important points on note taking:
1.	Left hand side is used for recall – put down key words for recall. After class, look at left hand side for your recall notes. With these notes, you should be able to recall the essence of the film or lecture.
2.	5 R’s : Record, reduce, recite, reflect, review
3.	After a lecture or film, revise notes as quickly as possible.
4.	Important: Use one side sheet of paper only for notes.
5.	Use transition words.

HW:
1. Read Anna Quindlen story, pp.573-575.
2. Read “Cornell Method of Note Taking”
