Parts of the paper
1. Introduction: a preview. Tell the audience what your topic is.
2. Body: in the paragraphs of your paper, tell them the details.
3. Conclusion: tell them what you what you told them. Everything has to be clear in your
    paper. Draw the audience in.
 
INTRODUCTION;
Draw them in. Hook them.
A.    Use a question.
B.    Use a quote. This quote has to refer to your topic (Example: paper on Ghandi, quote needs to relate to the topic – change, activism, etc.) Be relevant. Go to Google, type in quotes or quotation bank – which is set up in categories.
C.    Use stories/anecdotes (little short stories).
D.    Use a shocking statement: Example from Bible movie: “Hey, Mom, I’m gay.” At Thanksgiving dinner, when asked how you are, answer, “I’m gay.”
E.    Use contrasting or contradictory statements. Read pp. 232. 233. 234, 235 in your text for more ideas.
F.    Introduction should be 5-7 sentences.
 
BODY OF THE PAPER
Background context: topic going from general to specific.
A.    Thesis + 3 paragraphs. The thesis is the last sentence at end of the 1st   paragraph. Having a thesis sentence counts as 25 points. This is very important.
B.    The purpose of your paper needs to be clear. Tomorrow, come in with 5 pieces of paper, your essay cut up: introduction, 1st paragraph, 2nd paragraph, 3rd paragraph, conclusion.
C.    Notice transition words that lead from paragraph to paragraph.  Some transition words could be: also, then, to begin with, lastly.
D.    The topic sentences and transition words should be obvious.
E.    The final paper should have, at least, 2 pages.
F.    Tomorrow, bring the components of your paper, cut up. (5 parts)
 
CONCLUSION
This is a summary.
A.    This summary tells the audience what was told to them in the body of the  paper.
B.    The conclusion should contain 3-6 sentences.
C.    See pp. 235-237 for suggestions.
D.    Have conclusion flow logically from your essay.
 
Note: Don’t sign up for an online English writing class at any time.
          Don’t take English 100 in summer because it is a very short class, teachers are not
          very accessible, and the Writing Center is not open.
 
HW:
1.    Chapter 14: “The Process of Writing An Essay”
    a. Part E: Do Practices 8-10, pp. 192-199
    b. Incorporate these ideas into your paper
2.  Tomorrow, bring typed on a half sheet of paper:
    a. Thesis sentence
    b. Each topic sentence
    c. Strongest sentence in the conclusion
3.  Complete Outline, typed on a separate sheet of paper. Included in outline:
    a. Thesis sentence
    b. Each topic sentence
    c. Strongest sentence in the conclusion
4.  Each paragraph, typed on a separate sheet of paper. You will be bringing in 5
     sheets of paper. These will be used as a puzzle in tomorrow’s class. HAVE
     TRANSITION WORDS TO CREATE A FLOW FROM EACH
     PARAGRAPH.  The 5 sheets of paper should be:
    a. Introduction
    b. 1st paragraph (your thesis statement should be the last sentence of this
         paragraph.)
    c. 2nd paragraph
    d. 3rd paragraph
    e. Conclusion
