Brainstorming: COLDS/ ALLERGIES: water vitamin c, airborne, water, alderberries/ elderberries/ Jack Daniels., alcohol + red pepper. Green tea+ honey + lemon+ gingerroot + cayenne pepper, spicy Thai soup, -- drink juices, apple cider, chicken soup, hot alcohol/ toddy/ whiskey/ honey. Water Olga’s Oil – put on napkin and breathe in, steam, hot showers, breathe it in  -- burns, gargle with salt water. Most can be done to ourselves with these remedies.
 
Necessary criteria for a topic sentence:  l. topic 2. Controlling idea (limits focus 3. Clear, 4. Engaging 5. Compelling 6, Purposeful goes with meaningful 7. Concise and complete sentence 8. Specific, clear language
 
Education: too broad: need to say something about control and authority, rules, strictness from the video: “Another Brick in the Wall”
 
Society’s idea of the ideal student is incorrectly portrayed.
Through authority, kids are being brainwashed.
(need to have some control in a society – a happy medium where things make sense)
Conformity, creativity, self-esteem, confidence

Can change from positive to negative by lowering self esteem, self-confidence, creativity
A rigid educational system leads to a lower self-esteem, self-confidence, creativity.
 
Side-line: Dalai Lama—Seeds of Compassion. There is a website: “Seeds of Compassion” expressing his ideas. Everyone should be open-minded – should be disturbed to change mind, provoked, challenged, changed.
What would you ask him? How to turn the world around? How to turn the world around from bleeding within to love to one of hope for a better tomorrow
 
Back to class: Topic sentences do not always have to be stated; can be implied. But in Beginning English classes, topic sentence needs to be stated until you create your own style – need to have control over your own writing. Later on. you can imply, but right now, need to have very clear, concise topic sentence. When we read the first sentence, needs to meet the criteria. Give classmates feedback to make this sentence clear, concise, etc.
 
Tomorrow: read Homeward Bound, read pp. 533-534. Before reading, ask what is the purpose of this reading. Read only the writing assignments – you might find another fun topic to write about, p. 571 Draw a line through 512-513. HW will be checked tomorrow. Probably put in groups . HW will also be checked next Wed., during the 1st workshop if not checked tomorrow. The HW you should have for tomorrow: if done in workbook, have this tabbed. Otherwise have on separate piece of paper. Check if all the work is completed. Check+ is give for good work plus good notes.  Minus is given if missing work.
