           Discussion of “Homeward Bound”

Put in groups of 3: answer questions 1-4, face each other, introduce each other again to get sense of community come back in 15 minutes to get answers

Question #1: author is American Chinese contrasts feet of grandmother with her own -- is there one major question that you would like to ask about this story – what is the purpose of binding feet in this culture? (Ask questions about things you do not know) – tie feet very tightly so feet do not get bigger- this is no longer allowed/ beauty, aesthetic, visual – class distinction (light skin), way to dominate women, person with tiny feet can’t get around as easily.

Question #2: strange and beautiful: connection between the two of them/ blood-ties/ affection

Question #3: “You are lucky” – represented freedom she had

Question #4: visiting relatives: learn form them/ learn from the older generations

Title: Homeward Bound
Note the words:
Bound/Homeward: author going back to her roots/double meaning with these words/ there is a play on words
Grandmother – bound at home
Granddaughter – looks at Grandmother – glad to have you as my grandmother
Grandmother – looks at Granddaughter – glad to have you as my granddaughter
