Design Drafting Class

Mission Statement

The Design Drafting Department serves community learners with quality, state-of-the-art technical and professional education leading to the awarding of Associate of Applied science Degrees in Design Drafting Technology, Mechanical Design Technology, and Manufacturing Technology-CIM as well as occupational certificates in Mechanical Drafting and Architectural-Structural-Civil Drafting. Learners receive outcome-oriented, performance-based curricular offerings in individual and group learning environments designed to provide support and guidance to each leaner. The latest techniques and learning objective are employed to provide the students with contemporary skills for an ever-changing work place.

Goals

  1. To provide focus and curriculum approved by the Technical Advisory Committee meeting the needs of local industry.
    Objectives:
    • Meet three times a year with the Technical Advisory Committee to review competency list and update curriculum in response to changes in industry.
    • Verify that all drafting assignments comply with industry standards and requirements by reviewing assignments with Technical Advisory Committee on a regular basis.
    • Incorporate changes to the ANSI/ASME drawing standards into classroom instruction
    • Solicit other industry people to serve on the Technical Advisory Committee.
  2. To provide quality instruction using state-of-the-art equipment and methods.
    Objectives:
    • Verify computers, software, and equipment comply with current industry practice by reviewing with Technical Advisory Committee and by reviewing the literature.
    • Acquire computers, software, and equipment reflecting what is currently used in the industry.
    • Research and develop ways to evaluate student attainment of competencies.
  3. To provide a learning environment for the community of learners who are divers in their academic, cultural and economic backgrounds.
    Objectives:
    • Model and expect from learners good communication and cooperation among all working partners and groups.
    • Prohibit inflammatory speech, ethnic slurs, sexual harassment, or disrespect for cultural and personal differences.
    • Model and expect from learners ethical business behavior.
  4. To provide proper sequencing and course offerings which facilitate program completion within the specified time frame for both day and night learners.
    Objectives:
    • Schedule classes to ensure learners can complete the programs in a timely manner.
    • Offer each class a minimum of once each academic year.
    • Offer the following four courses, DT131, DT135, DT151, and DT231, in the evenings at least once every four years.
    • Schedule support classes (Math, English, Communications, Speech, and Engineering) that complement the schedule for the drafting classes.
  5. To promote the recruitment, retention, and placement of learners.
    Objectives:
    • Schedule and conduct a “Drafting Open House” each year and invite all prospective learners who have completed the college admission application in addition to notifying the Drafting instructor at the local high schools who can encourage prospective learners to attend.
    • Schedule and conduct a “Group Advising” session each quarter to assist students in planning their course schedules for the upcoming quarters.
    • Participate in the development and support the implementation of the Tech Prep “Articulation Agreements” with the local secondary drafting programs.
    • Faculty will expand contacts with industry, to gain their support, learn about new trends, and enhance graduates' employment opportunities.
  6. To promote communication, coordination, and cooperation within the department and between departments.
    Objectives:
    • Schedule at minimum, one formal meeting yearly with part-time faculty to review departmental procedures, process, and curriculum.
    • Articulate to the departments delivering support classes the competencies industry expects from entry level drafters and designers.
  7. To provide educational opportunities for developing attitudes, perfecting skills, and acquiring knowledge necessary for individuals to be effective and competitive throughout lifetime employment in changing work environment.
    Objectives:
    • Students will be able to demonstrate good time management.
    • Provide a wide range of learning experiences offering learners the opportunity to acquire a breadth of knowledge and skills.
    • Student will gain technical skills and the knowledge necessary for solving practical drafting and design problems.
  8. To provide career planning necessary for learners to achieve their professional goals and objectives
    Objectives:
    • Assist the learner to identify individual strengths for various career options.
    • Identify and assist those students who need to improve their basic academic skills.
    • Increase the percentage of students who obtain an AAS degree.
  9. To promote the various degree and certificate program options to learners.
    Objectives:
    • Develop and distribute literature describing the degree and certificate requirements to current and prospective learners.
    • Schedule and conduct a orientation session once each quarter describing the degree and certificate options.
    • Communicate with Educational Planning the requirements for the degree and certificate options.
  10. To promote professional development among the members of the department.
    Objectives:
    • Attend conferences, workshops, and seminars related to faculty professional development.
    • All full-time and part-time faculty will maintain valid “Vocational Teaching Certificates”.
    • All full-time faculty will work to remain current by reading publications, taking courses, and working in industry.
