About Design Drafting Technology

Design Drafters translate the ideas and rough sketches of engineers and architects into drawings to communicate specific details to other engineers, architects, drafters, and technicians. Drawings are used as a basis for further research and design, for manufacturing and construction, and for documenting the engineer's concept.

GRCC’s Drafting department has long been respected by the various regional companies for producing well-trained students for the local job market. We offer 4 AAS degree and 8 certificate programs highlighting various fields of study. Students selecting one of these programs will develop proficiency in board drafting and computer-aided drafting based on the drafting standards set out by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

We have recently added a number of 3-D programs designed for different industry uses. Two of these computer programs are “Feature based solid modelers” Solidworks and AutoDesk’s Inventor, created for part design and manufacturing. The civil drafting classes have incorporated AutoDesk’s 3D Civil into the curriculum, as requested by the local employers, to properly prepare students for real work in the various fields.

With these industry leading programs added to our curriculum, we stand poised to give our students the instruction and exposure to the technical information they will need for current and future changes in the engineering fields.

Design drafting is a large and fast-growing occupation; the future of the field is wide open. Computers will assist drafting procedures, but they can never replace the design drafter who has a comprehensive drafting education.
