Basic CASAS Testing Requirements
Green River implemented the CASAS Life and Work reading test series during summer quarter, 2008, and the listening test series during fall quarter, 2008. CASAS policies and the Washington state assessment policies [link to N Drive] mandate certain testing protocols; local procedures determine others..

When determining which students to post-test, keep in mind the following testing policies: “Providers should administer post-tests, using an alternate form of the pre-test, at the end of a quarter if the learner has persisted for at least 45 hours of instruction, or, for less intensive programs [such as our 2-day/wk classes], after five months of instruction, to document learning gains.

Instructors are responsible for the security of all testing materials from the time you pick them up until you return them to the office. However, the front office staff takes much of the worry out of test security for ESOL instructors. They maintain the test inventory and fill test orders for pick-up in the office. Testing boxes are hand-delivered to off-campus sites. In both cases, instructors are given information about where to return the boxes when testing is completed.

Instructors at the Kent Campus must ensure security of the tests available in the locked cabinet in the faculty office. Completed student answer sheets must be kept secure before they are sent to the Basic Skills office.

Below are your obligations:

-Return all materials immediately to the location identified by the front office
    - Collect all scratch paper and return to the office with testing materials
    - Do not duplicate for or discuss tests/test questions with the students
    - Do not provide answers to test items or go over tests with students
    - Insist that students do their own work.
This may require you to adjust the seating
arrangement in class or use file folders as dividers to limit straying eyes.

Standardized testing by definition requires that the testing conditions be the same for every person taking the test. It is important that you do not provide additional direction beyond reading the directions at the top of the first page of the test booklets. You may talk with students about the practice items to be sure they understand. Talk about the answer sheets and how to bubble the correct answer. Insist that students turn off their cell phones prior to the test, and demonstrate by doing the same yourself.

Monitor students as they begin the test to be sure they are starting on the correct side of the answer sheet and with the correct item number. Continue to supervise and monitor the testing. Do not leave test takers unattended at any time. Follow the standard time limits. At the end of the test, be sure to collect all the test booklets, answer sheets, scratch paper, pencils and erasers. These must be returned to the office in your testing box.

Time Limits This is one of the main areas of standardization. The time limit for CASAS Life and Work series Reading pre- and post-tests is one hour. Time limits     for the Life and Work listening tests vary by test level (see chart below). You may allow a student 2-3 minutes to complete the questioning they are working on, but s/he should not turn the page to begin a new question.

Life and Work Listening Test Timing

Level A  - Listening 81 and 82 - 35 minutes
Level B  -  Listening 83 and 84 - 40 minutes
Level C  -  Listening 85 and 86 - 30 minutes
