About John

John Avery

John Avery has been teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages at Green River Community College since Jan. 1993. John started teaching children in Sunnyvale, California and later after volunteering as a tutor of immigrant adults, he decided to switch to ESL at the college level. Consequently, he earned an MA:English in TESOL from Portland State University. His thesis was entitled, Inducing Schemata Through Pre-Reading Activities. John then taught for 5 years in the preparatory and university English programs at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The teaching of reading has been a consistent focus in his career. In 2003, he co-authored College Reading 3 as part of the Houghton English for Academic Success series.

John is currently teaching Level 5 in the ESOL program and he serves as the Division Chair for the Transitional Studies and Wellness Division.
