Dr. Sabah Jabbouri

Sabah earned his bachelor’s degree in Forestry in 1971 from Mosul University in Iraq. Upon earning his bachelor’s degree, he worked as an Assistant Lecturer in the Forestry Department and joined Iraqi Teacher Association as well as the Engineering Agriculture Union. Subsequently, he was appointed as Acting Director of the College of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1978, he completed his master’s degree in Watershed Science at Utah State University. Later, he moved to Washington State where he earned, in 1984, a Ph.D. in Watershed Forest Hydrology from University of Washington.

After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Sabah returned to Iraq where he was hired as a Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the College of Agriculture & Forestry, Mosul University. In 1987, he was transferred to the College of Engineering, University of Salahaddin, Erbil, Iraq. As a member of the Continuing Education Program, he helped plan and teach the workshops. In 1988, Sabah published a textbook in Arabic: Hydrology and Watershed Management, University of Mosul Press. That same year, Sabah proposed and defended establishing Bakhma Dam Research Unit as a center for research studies. He was named director of Bakhma Dam Research Unit where he took on the responsibility of supervising, advising, as well as supporting the staff and the researchers. From 1991 to 1997, Sabah worked as an assistant professor in Natural Resources Department at several universities in North Africa. In 1999, Sabah decided to come back to the United States where he volunteered at GRCC Natural Resources Department. In 2001 he decided to pursue a certificate in GIS from GRCC.

Immediately after earning his GIS Certificate in 2002, Sabah filled in the position of GIS instructor at GRCC during the 2002-2003 academic year teaching all the GIS courses. He volunteered for Mercy Corps Tsunami GIS project from March to July 2005. He returned to GRCC in 2006 to teach GIS courses and to review the GIS program to meet the Geospatial industry demand. The new program was approved and is in effect now which includes new courses.

Today, Sabah enjoys helping students achieve their educational goals and prepares them for employment in this growing industry. He is also a member of the Society of American Foresters as well as a member of the Urban Regional Information Systems Association (URISA). Sabah has more than twenty years of international experience working collaboratively with higher educational institutions, businesses, and governmental agencies, which has enabled him to facilitate several projects. Currently at GRCC, there is cooperation between the GIS and the Natural Resources departments seeking to involve students from both departments in accomplishing the joint projects. Sabah is facilitating the implementation of GIS technology within the Natural Resources discipline for the success of the projects.
