GIS Program Options

GIS is an essential part of Geospatial Technology and one of the fourteen industry sectors of High Growth Job Training Initiatives identified by the Department of Labor that fit within the following criteria:

(1)They are projected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to the economy or affect the growth of other industries;

or

Green River Community College reviewed and updated the GIS program to meet the challenges of the 21st century and to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness in workplace decision-making. GIS is one of the hottest new tools that can be used in education and research. It provides essential information tools for educators to use in helping students understand real-world problems using data analysis. Faculty can use GIS to help students visualize complex spatial relationships in many disciplines that include, but are not limited to: Health, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Geology, Criminal Justice, Home Land Security, Business Administration, Journalism, and Politics. In addition, GIS has been used by city, county, and state governments in transportation, cadastres, utilities, and facilities.

Green River Community College offers three GIS Program options to help you acquire skills that apply directly to your area of interest in the workplace:

  1. GIS Certificate of Proficiency - 3 Quarters

  2. GIS AAS Degree - 2 Years

  3. GIS-Natural Resources AAS degree - 2 Years (a joint program with Natural Resources Department)
