Melbourne
Melbourne is situated
in southeastern Australia. It is one of the great livable cities of the world,
noted for its diversity, vitality, and sophistication, a center for arts and
culture with ready access to the wonders of Australia’s natural history. This
makes Melbourne a cosmopolitan, harmonious and dynamic city in which to live
and study and Newman College is in an ideal location to enjoy all the activities
that the city presents.
Australia: Land
Australia consists of
two land masses: mainland Australia and Tasmania. It lies on and extends south
from the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere. It is bounded by
the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Indian Ocean to the west, the Arafura Sea
to the north, and the Southern Ocean to the south. New Zealand is 1920 kilometres
(1200 miles) east, and Antartica is 2000 kilometres (1250 miles) due south.
The area of Australia is 7,682,300 square kilometres (4,801,438 square miles). Australia is about the size of the mainland United States, excluding Alaska, and approximately 24 times the size of the British Isles.
Australia: Climate
Australia is considered
to be one of the driest continents on earth. However, because of its insular
position and lack of natural features such as high mountain ranges, there
are generally no great extremes of climate. Climate varies because of the
size of the continent. The temperature ranges from 23-26°C above the Tropic
of Capricorn to 38°C in the arid plateus and deserts of the interior.
Commonwealth of Nations
Like New Zealand, Australia
is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, a worldwide associaton of nations
which recognise, or did recognise, the British monarch as its head.
