History of the Movies - On-Line

Unit 1 - Introduction

Dr. Bruce Haulman

Welcome to the Introduction to the History of the Movies On-Line

To get started in this class you need to complete the following nine things.

1. Take some time and work through the structure of the course and the course web site.  This will help you to become familiar with what is expected of you and the skills you need to be successful.

Take a look at the following links in Angel:
     Syllabus (see assignment #3)
     Message Board (see assignment #5)

Look at each item and post any question you have on the Message Board.   Everyone can read this and anyone is welcome to respond to any questions that are raised.  This is your area for talking with one another or with me just as you would do before or after class in a regular classroom.

If you want to talk with me privately you can e-mail me or give me a call at the phone number listed on the Course Information Page.

2. Take the self-exam "Is An On-Line Course For Me," and email me your results (the number of A, B, C's) and a short paragraph with your reactions to the exam.  I have you do this so you can assess yourself before taking this class to make sure you will be successful.  I ask you to e-mail me your results and a short paragraph so I know you can use the e-mail system and I get a sample of your writing abilities.

3. Read through the Syllabus on the Syllabus link in Lessons.  Then post a question or an observation about the syllabus to the Message Board.   This assignment lets me know you have read the syllabus and understand what this course expects of you, and begins your contact with other students on the Message Board.

4.  Go to one of the links listed below, choose a link to follow and then e-mail me a short paragraph describing the site, why you chose it, and your reactions to it. (about 150 words or one half typed double spaced page will do)  This assignment lets me know you know how to use the web, lets me know something about your interest in Movie History, and again gives me a sample of your writing abilities.

7.  View the video "The Classic Hollywood Style."  While you are viewing the video, be sure to take notes.  Identify the major elements of the Classic Style, look for key concepts about the Classic Style from examples used in the video, and look for comments about the Classic Style from the individuals interviewed in the video.  You can use these notes when you watch "The Wizard of Oz" to see how the film uses the elements of the Classic Style.

 8. "Watch the film The Wizard of Oz." (1939, MGM)  Use the three forms of film analysis discussed in the video "Thinking and Writing About Film" (filmic, social, gender), and what you learned about the Classic Style from the "Classic Hollywood Style" video to think about how this film represents the Classic Hollywood Style.
