Welcome to Unit 4 of the History of the Movies On-Line

Innovation and Transformation 1927-1938

To complete Unit 4 in this class you need to complete the following six things.

1.  Read Chapter 3 "Technical Innovation and Industrial Transformation 1927-1938" in the Jon Lewis textbook American Cinema: A History.

 

2.  View the video "Romantic Comedy."  While you are viewing the video, be sure to take notes.  Identify the elements of the Romantic Comedy genre, look for the key concept of gender roles, and the particular role of women in the genre.

3.  Choose one of the following  Romantic Comedy films.  Find a copy in a video store, rent it and view it.

     It Happened One Night (1938)
     Bringing Up Baby (1939)
     His Girl Friday (1940)
     My Favorite Wife (1940)
     The Lady Eve (1941)

4.  Post a comment on the Message Board about the film you viewed and how it represents the Innovations and Transformations Lewis discusses in the textbook.

5.  Complete Quiz # 4 - go to quizzes in the Lessons Tab to take Quiz # 4
 


6.  Your Film Paper #1 is due this week.  Your paper should answer the question:

Which Movie, Citizen Kane or Casablanca, do you consider to be the Greatest/Best Movie Ever Made?

Your paper should be 3 - 4 pages (750 to 1000 words) and be in essay format.  See the Syllabus for additional information on this assignment.

This Film Paper # 1 is worth 100 points.

Your paper should have a clear introductory paragraph that sets up your argument, a series of body paragraphs that state your argument, and a clear conclusion that states your conclusion
 

Your papers will be graded for thoughtfulness, clarity, originality, structure, grammar, and spelling.
 

Please email your papers to me as an email NOT an attachment.  I will grade and return the paper to you via email.

 

These assignments conclude Unit 4 of this class.
