Welcome to Unit 8 of the History of the Movies On-Line

Moving Toward a New Hollywood

To complete Unit 8 in this class you need to complete the following six things.

1.  Read Chapter 6 "Moving Toward a New Hollywood 1955-1967" in the Jon Lewis textbook American Cinema: A History.

 

2. View the video "Film in the Age of Television."  While you are viewing the video, be sure to take notes.  Identify the ways in which Hollywood responded to the new medium of television.  Look for comments about this response from the individuals interviewed in the video.  You can use these notes to write your paper and strengthen your argument by making reference to examples from the video.

3.  Choose one of the following films.  Find a copy in a video store, rent it and view it.

     Ben Hur (1959)
     Cleopatra (1963)
     Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
     The Sound of Music (1965)

4. Chose either Bonnie and Clyde (1967) or The Graduate (1967), find a copy in a video store or library, rent it or check it out, and view it.

Be sure to read the section in Lewis's Chapter 6 on these two films before you view one of them.

5. Click on the Message Board link to post a comment about how the big budget studio production film you viewed differed from either Bonnie and Clyde or The Graduate.  Be sure to discuss the role of the Classic Hollywood Style and the declining influence of the Production Code.

6.  Complete Quiz # 7 - click on the link in the Lessons Tab to take Quiz # 7
 

7.  Your Film Paper # 2 is due next week.  Your paper should answer the question:

"What is Postmodern about  _________ ?" (the blank should be the film you choose to watch next week.  (This is an opportunity to think ahead).

Your paper should summarize the film you chose and identify why your film is a good example of postmodernism.   Support your argument with examples from the textbook, the Postmodern Web Site, and the video.

 

Your paper should be 3 - 4 pages (750 to 1000 words) and be in essay format.  See the Syllabus for additional information on this assignment.

This Film Paper # 1 is worth 100 points.

This assignment is due next week in Unit 9.
 


Your paper should have a clear introductory paragraph that sets up your argument, a series of body paragraphs that state your argument, and a clear conclusion that states your conclusion
 

Your papers will be graded for thoughtfulness, clarity, originality, structure, grammar, and spelling.
 

Please email your papers to me as an email NOT an attachment.  I will grade and return the paper to you via email.
