Australian Movies are a window on Australian culture.  The most cherished ideas, myths, symbols, and attitudes of Australian culture appear in the movies we will watch.  This course surveys the emergence of Australian movies from the beginnings in the 1890’s, through the Revival of the 1970’s, to the establishment of Australian Cinema as an important part of World Cinema.

This class provides an opportunity for you to develop the following skills:

 

1.  Understand the historical development of the film industry in Australia.

2.  Identify and provide examples of a uniquely Australian cinema.

3.  Critically and aesthetically evaluate Australian cinema within the context of Australian film, Hollywood films, and World Cinema.

4.  Place specific Australian films within the historical context of the development of a unique Australian cinema.
