To complete this fifth week of the class you need to do the following Eight (8)  things:

1. Read the Profile "The Whitman Tragedy at Waiilatpu," Chapter 5 "Bound for the Promised Land," Chapter 6 "Oregon Country," Chapter 7 "Growing Pains," and Chapter 8 "Holes in the Social Fabric" in Schwantes.  Visit the Study Guide for help in identifying important concepts

2. Whitman reading (5.1)

Read the article by Julie Roy Jefferies and write a short (one page or so) comparison of her view of the Whitman Incident and Carlos Schwantes view in his Profile "The Whitman Tragedy at Waiilatpu."

4.   Gold Rushes

Use the map on Page 132 in Schwantes to identify where the gold rushes in the Pacific Northwest were located.  Search the Internet to find information on any of these rushes.  Then e-mail me the URL or web address of the site you found, a short description of the site, and what you learned

5.   Indian Treaties

Click on this link to go to the Medicine Creek Treaty.  Read the Language of the Treaty and try to understand how Indians and whites had different interpretations.
