Class announcements, such as due dates, changes in the schedule, etc., are posted on this page during the quarter.


Week of March 10
Note: This is the last week of the quarter! As you complete your study of the material in Chapter 6, if you would like additional problems for extra practice you can try the following: 24, 48, 52, 63, 66, 75, 78, 91, and 92 a,b. As has been the case with previous chapters these are only for you to do as you feel you need, and are not to be turned in with the assignment.

The following items are due on Monday. As indicated in the syllabus, items are due at the beginning of class on the due date.

The third unit exam will be on Monday, March 16. The concepts you should be sure to review for the test are listed in the Review Summary.

Then Tuesday, March 17, is Study Day, a day set aside for student review and preparation for final exams. I will be in or around my office, SC–202, for most of the time from 9–12 AM. Drop by if you have questions, or want to pick up your lab books or other graded papers. Grades, as of that morning, will also be posted. As discussed in class, we will have a review session from 1–2 PM on Tuesday, and you can also pick up materials then. We will use this time to go over the results of Exam III, and review for the final exam.

Final exams for Winter Quarter begin on Wednesday, March 18. The times the Chemistry 140 final will be offered are indicated below; the exams will be held in the classrooms indicated. You must take your exam at the designated time unless you have made arrangements to take it earlier. Students in the day section are welcome to join the evening class on Wednesday.

Final exams will not be available for pick up until after all of them have been graded, which will likely not be before Friday noon, March 20. If you would like to have your exam mailed to you leave a stamped, addressed envelope with me at the time of your final. Otherwise, the exams can be picked up at the beginning of Spring Quarter.

If you would like to have me e–mail your exam and final grades to you, send me an e–mail requesting your grade prior to 11 AM on Friday, March 20. Do note, I will not be responding to e–mails during spring break! Yes, faculty take a break too!

Week of March 9
You should now be reading the assigned sections of Chapters 6 and completing the assigned problems at the end of Chapter 5. Once that is done you should start on the Chapter 6 assignment.

This week will be our last for completing laboratory experiments. On Monday we will do the Determination of the Gas Law Constant lab, and then on Wednesday we will complete the Hess’s Law lab. We will also check out of the lab on Wednesday

Week of March 2
You should continue with your reading of the assigned sections of Chapters 5 & 6 and complete the assigned problems at the end of Chapter 5. Once that is done you can start on the Chapter 6 assignment.

On Monday we will be conducting the Boyle’s Law lab and completing our discussions of the gas laws during lecture. (Tuesday lecture for the day section.) As discussed in class I will be away from campus on Wednesday and Thursday. Use the class time to complete the Chapter 5 assignment and write up the labs conducted to date.

Week of February 23
Once Exam II is completed on Monday you should be reading the assigned sections of Chapter 5 in the text, and begin working on the assigned problems at the end of the chapter. Once again, if you would like additional problems from Chapter 5 to practice on you can try the following: 12, 14d, 20, 23, 24, 28, 30, 43, 45, 50, 54, 56, 62, 71, and 98. As has been the case with previous chapters these are only for you to do as you feel you need extra practice, and are not to be turned in with the assignment.

Keep in mind that for the second exam you will be expected to know the symbols for the elements in the List of Elemental Symbols, as well as the ions and their charges in the List of Ions and Their Charges.


Week of February 9
This week you should be reading the assigned sections of Chapters 3 & 4, and begin working on the assigned problems at the end of Chapter 4. As before, if you would like additional problems from Chapter 4 to practice on you can try the following: 16a, 18a, 33, 35, 49, 51, 54, 66, 67, 78, 87, 89, 99, and 101. As has been the case with previous chapters these are only for you to do as you feel you need extra practice, and are not to be turned in with the assignment.

On Monday in lab we will work up the data for the Reaction of Hydrogen Peroxide and Bleach experiment, completing the calculations using Excel. We will begin the Analysis of Hard Water experiment during the Wednesday lab period.

Week of February 2
This week you should be reading the assigned sections of Chapter 3 and working to complete the assigned problems at the end of the chapter. If you would like additional problems for practice you can try the following: 8, 12, 16, 25, 35, 39, 43, 51, 53, 65, 68, 75, 77, 79, 83, 96, 98, 100, 106, 114 and 121. As has been the case with previous chapters these are only for you to do as you feel you need extra practice, and are not to be turned in with the assignment.

On Monday we will complete the Nine Solutions lab as well as have some time for you to redo any of the reactions you might want to double–check. The pre–lab discussion of the next lab, Reaction of Hydrogen Peroxide and Bleach will be on Wednesday. We will also get a start on that lab, but you will not be expected to complete the work on that lab until the following Monday.

Remember that Exam I on Unit 1, covering Chapters 1&2, will be on Monday, January 26. For this test you will be required to know the symbols for the elements listed in the Table of Elements, as well as the ions and their charges listed in the Table of Ions and Their Charges. The concepts you should be sure to review for the test are listed in the Review Summary outline.

Once Exam I is completed you should begin your work on Chapter 3 by reading the assigned sections of the chapter in your text and start on the assigned problems at the end of the chapter.

For the second exam you will be required to know the symbols for the elements in the list of Elements & Symbols — II, as well as the ions and their charges in the list of Ions and their Charges — II. These are made available now so that you can begin learning both well in advance of the exam.


Week of January 19
This week we will complete our discussions of the remaining material in Chapters 1 & 2, so you should be sure to have read the appropriate sections of the text, and completed the assigned problems at the end of Chapter 2. If you would like additional problems for practice in Chapter 2 try the following: 8, 23, 37, 41, 43, 47, 49, 56, 84, 86, 90, 92, 94, 97, 99, 102, and 136. These are only for you to do if you feel you need extra practice, and are not to be turned in with the assignment.

We will use some lab time on Wednesday to complete our discussions of the calculations and write up of the “Density of a Liquid Mixture” lab. With all of the work you will need to complete for this lab, including the calculations and graphical work in Excel, this report will not be due until next week. Those due dates are listed below.

On Wednesday we will also start the “Formula of a Hydrate” lab.

The due dates for this week and next are as listed in the table below. Keep in mind that you will be turning in one copy of the homework for your group, with your group’s best solution to each problem, and with each individual’s name on the paper.

Should you chose, the reports and/or homework can, of course, be turned in earlier than these dates.

Exam I, originally on the course schedule for Thursday of this week, is rescheduled for Monday of next week, which is January 26. For this test you will be required to know the symbols for the elements listed in the Short list of Elements & Symbols, as well as the ions and their charges listed in the Short List of Common Ions and Their Charges. The concepts you should be sure to review for the test can be found in the Review Summary outline.


Week of January 12
You should be finishing your reading of the assigned sections of Chapter 1 in your text and completing the assigned problems at the end of the chapter. If you would like additional problems for practice try the following: 8, 36, 38, 54, 58, 62, 72, 74, and 83. These are only for you to do as you feel you need extra practice, and are not to be turned in with the assignment.

Then, after finishing your work on the material in Chapter 1, and before Friday’s lecture, you should complete your first reading of Chapter 2. And after you have completed the Chapter 1 assignment you can then get a start on the assigned problems for Chapter 2.

Week of January 5
There are no due dates for this week. You should begin your study by completing the reading assignments in Chapter 1 and getting a start on the Problem Assignment. Check the handout titled “Homework Assignments” for information on how you are to complete the assignment. The due date for this first assignment is tentatively set for January 14.
