What is Manufacturing Technology?

The manufacturing industry in the U.S. is rebounding from a deep national recession and continues to face strong competition from global producers. One of the keys to continued recovery lies with our manufacturing workforce. Nationally, and in Washington State, there is intense interest in defining the basic skills that employees need in a modern manufacturing enterprise, and ensuring that employees have those skills. These are not only the skills and knowledge needed to produce high quality products in the most cost effective ways, but also the skills needed to adapt to changing business environments and actively contribute to improving company operations.

The manufacturing technology program offered at Green River College is designed for both the new student entering the field of manufacturing, and for the current employee who wishes to learn more about the knowledge and skills currently in demand by employers.

Green River College's Manufacturing Technology Program is designed to prepare individuals for entry into the job market as Conventional or CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machinist trainees.  Instruction covers conventional turning, milling and grinding, as well as basic programming, set up and operation of CNC machine tools.  Other subjects include shop safety, blueprint reading, shop mathematics, CAD/CAM, machine tool theory, inspection and surface plate techniques, as well as lean manufacturing and other skills currently required by industry.

"I decided that I was going to learn how to work just a little more accurately than any of the other apprentices around me, and when I had succeeded in doing this, then I decided that I would learn to do it still more accurately than I had done before.  Throughout my whole life that has been my one idea."
                                                                     --Lucian Sharpe, 1876
