Week 1

Lab#1 Keying plants and drawing plants

Prelab: Read Drawing: The Making of a Plate experiment #1. Buy some drawing paper and pencils.

Each person will carefully produce 2 drawings of 2 different species. The drawings will show all parts useful in identification including whole plant diagnostic features. The drawings will be drawn to scale. Drawings of all parts of the flower and how they are attached are critical.

Postlab: Determine the name of the 2 different species you selected to draw and write a short essay  (less than a page typed, 12 point, font = Times, line spacing = 1.5) about each species. (e.g. uses, medicinal, where it grows, structure/function relationships ect., most any content is acceptable, just demonstrate that you did some literature research focused on the selected species)

Week 2

Lab #2 Plant diversity II: Seeded Vascular Plants

Prelab: Read Lab Topics 15 and 16. Write a brief introduction. Complete Table 16.1 and 16.2 (use web sites when necessary). Use flow charts, diagrams/illustrations, outlines, etc. or any other method you find useful and informative to summarize (not copy) all procedures followed or needed for this lab topic.

Lab: Working individually: Do exercise 16.1 Lab Studies A & B. Do exercise 16.2 lab studies A, B, & D.

Postlab: Title, Introduction, Prelab Prep. In groups of 4: Answer all application and discussion question in the completed lab studies. Answer questions for review, 1, 2, 3, & 4. Answer apply you knowledge questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6. I will evaluate one lab write-up from each group at random.

Lab # 3 Plant Structure

Prelab: Read Lab Topic 19. Write a brief introduction. What are the primary functions of stems. Use flow charts, diagrams/illustrations, outlines, etc. or any other method you find useful and informative to summarize (not copy) all procedures followed or needed for this lab topic.

Lab: Working collaboratively: Do exercise 19.1. Do exercise 19.2. Do exercise 19.3, Lab Studies A, B & C. Do exercise 19.4. Do exercise 19.5.

Postlab: Title, Introduction with 2 references, Prelab Prep. In groups of 4: Answer all application and discussion question in the completed lab studies. Answer questions for review, 1, 2, 3, & 4. Answer applying your knowledge questions, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8. I will evaluate one lab write-up from each group.

Lab #4 Samara dispersal

Prelab: Read Morphology and Dispersal Potential of Samara and Spearman’s Coefficient of Linear Correlation. Write an introduction. Use flow charts, diagrams/illustrations, outlines, etc. or any other method you find useful and informative to summarize (not copy) all procedures followed or needed for this lab topic. Find and cite a reference for this experiment.

Lab: Do the lab in groups of 4. Summarize class data for write-up

Postlab: This lab requires a formal lab write-up using the data collected including data analysis. Answer the questions as indicated in a separate section of your write-up. Remember to use at least 2 references. I will evaluate one lab write-up from each group.
