Dick Hopkins

Awards:

Dick has a rich and varied history in the natural resources field. Below are some of his accomplishments and areas of expertise.

·     Wildfire suppression and slash burning for 15 seasons

·     Party Leader of Bioclimatology Research for the proposed High Ross Dam.  Co-authored with Dr. Leo J. Fritschen, "Climatological Studies of the Ross Lake Basin" in the nation’s first environmental impact statement, Biotic Survey of the Ross Lake Basin

·     Served as procurement forester, log yard manager, operations forester, and forest manager

·     Operated a forestry contracting and consulting company (Mineral Creek Foresters).  Responsible for managing the company, securing projects, directing the quality and performance of work, and consulting.  Focused on fuels and vegetation management, fire management, young stand management, reforestation, herbicide application, and Scandinavian forestry equipment

·     Served as a consultant to several timber companies, primarily assisting with fuels and vegetation management plans and operations, in addition to managing Mineral Creek Foresters' contract prescription burning and wildfire initial attack responsibilities

·     Researched Scandinavian-built forestry equipment in Eastern Canada and Sweden.  Designed and directed the construction of a mobile chipper (Slash Abatement Forestry Equipment, or S.A.F.E.) which provided an alternative to slash burning of logging and forestry slash 

·     Forest Resources/Natural Resources faculty member at GRCC since 1993. Dick enjoys teaching natural resources by utilizing outdoor fieldwork and research projects.

·     Member of the Society of American Foresters and Washington Farm Forestry Association.

Rob Sjogren

Rob brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to his teaching drawn from his varied experiences.

·     Over 35 years experience in the Natural Resources field.

·     Experienced in Washington policy and methods, private operations and federal programs

·     Conducted Mt. Rainier mountain goat research

·     Experiences in monitoring elk herds for private landowners

·     Conducted stream research with Dept. of Natural Resources

·     Experienced Forest Manager

·     Industry raw materials acquisition and manufacturing processes

Pat Cummins (Faculty Emeritus)

Pat Cummins is the founder of the Forestry Technology program and grower and planter of many of the rhododendrons on campus.
