Andrea Roma Wins Peggy Dixon Two Year College Scholarship

Andrea Roma won this year's Peggy Dixon Two Year College Scholarship awarded by the Society of Physics Students (SPS).

The Society of Physics Students is a professional association for students under the umbrella of the American institute of Physics. Based on scholarship, potential and participation in the SPS this $2,000 award is intended for students who are transitioning from a two-year college into a physics bachelor's degree program.

Andrea is currently finishing up her Associate of Science Engineering Pre-Chemical, and Associate of Science Physics Degrees and will be transferring to the engineering program at the University of Washington beginning in the summer.

As a two year college, we seldom get students who are interested in research projects. However Andrea and fellow student Dmitriy Mironyuk have been working since this fall on getting a muon telescope installed at our college.

This telescope is part of the Washington Large Area Time coincidence Array (WALTA) led by physicists at the University of Washington. The detector will soon be moved to its permanent location atop the new science building. What is also exceptional is that Andrea and Dmitriy are mentoring junior students so that the project will continue when they graduate.

In addition to attending school Andrea cares for her family of four children and husband.

The scholarship is named in memory of the late Dr. Peggy A. Dixon of Montgomery Community College, Maryland. She is fondly remembered as an inspirational SPS advisor and the historian of the SPS and the Sigma Pi Sigma (the honor society for physics students).
