Residents of South King County, who are interested in becoming elementary or middle school teachers, have a unique opportunity to earn a Bachelor Degree and Teaching Certificate from Central Washington University on Green River Community College's Kent campus. The class of 2010 will earn a BA in Elementary Education with a minor in Middle-level Science, and a teaching certificate with endorsements in Elementary Education (K-8) and Middle-level Science (4-9).

Following are a few frequently asked questions about the program.

Q. What are the prerequisites?

A:
The CWU at Green River program has specific prerequisites.  Therefore it is important to plan your classes carefully to ensure completion of all prerequisite courses by the start of the program in the fall.

Here's a link to CWU's transfer policies and course equivalents and a list of required prerequisites for fall 2009.**

Graduates of the Associate in Elementary Education at Green River will complete the required prerequisite courses for the CWU program by completing one chemistry and one astronomy lab science in addition to the IDS sequence. Graduates of the AA degree are also eligible for the program; however, additional courses (most of which can be counted within the AA) may be needed to fulfill prerequisites.

Q. Is this program the same as Central Washington’s Des Moines Center?

A: No. The CWU - Des Moines program is a double major leading to two endorsements on the Teaching Certificate: Elementary Education (K –Grade 8) and Early Childhood Education (PreK – Grade 3).  Additionally, the Des Moines program typically offers a day and an evening option. Students should apply to the program that is the best fit for them.

Q. When and how do I apply?

A: Application is a three-step process and requires applying to (1) Central Washington University,(2) CWU's teacher preparation program, and (3) the program at Green River Community College Kent Campus. The supplemental application for CWU’s program at Green River will be due April 15, 2009. All prerequisites, including full admission to CWU's Teacher Preparation Program must be completed before class starts fall quarter 2009.

Additionally, all students applying to any teacher preparation program must take the WEST-B. We recommend taking the WEST-B test no later than March of the year in which students plan to begin the program.

Q. How long is the program?

A: The program is six quarters long for the class of 2009. The class of 2010 will be enrolled for seven quarters. Classes begin each fall quarter and run continuously, including summer quarter. The class of 2009 will complete the program winter quarter of their second year and are encouraged to use spring quarter to get a jump start searching for permanent employment and/or for substitute teaching. Students who complete the prerequisites in two years at a community college earn teaching certificates in about 21 months, which is one quarter earlier than many certification programs.

The class of 2010 will complete the program spring 2010.

Q. When are the classes?

A: During the school year, classes are held in the late afternoon and early evening, usually between 3 and 7 pm, although occasional classes run as late as 9:00 p.m. Summer schedules vary and classes may be held at other times during the day. This program is full-time only; therefore, students are discouraged from keeping full-time employment.
