Speech 234: Small Group and Team
Leadership Fall 2002
So you have just become a manager.
Now What?
You have been a successful manager. How
can I be better?
You want to be a manager. Do I
have what it takes?
Welcome
Welcome to the Home Page of Small Group and Team Leadership.
This is a hybrid course of online study and in-classroom instruction
in leadership. We will meet a maximum of Eight Saturdays
throughout the quarter. The meeting room is in Building HS-B Room
7. The meeting times are 9:15AM through 11:45PM.
This fun, intensive course will provide the opportunity to
explore and learn leadership/group communication theory and
application. We will end the course producing a 3 hour
conference for the campus community.
This Home Page is set up to be easy and functional (as you can
see, not very fancy). This course is a combination of reading,
discussion, small group interaction, assignments, research, exams,
presentations, and classroom instruction.
Assignments and objectives for each week will be displayed on
Fridays for the next week. Assignments and research may be completed anytime;
however, they due at noon on Friday of the next week. Six to
eight Saturdays
will be devoted to classroom activities, presentations, and
instruction.
Questions for group discussion will be posted periodically.
Students are expected to monitor this page for new questions and
participate in context of reading material and personal experiences.
I am very happy and excited to be teaching this course; I look
forward to meeting and learning about each one of you.
Getting Started in the flex class: Spech 234: Small Group
Leadership
First click on the Syllabus with
Course Information link and read the syllabus. I want you
to have a complete understanding of what this course is all
about. If you have questions, then email me at rmattson@greenriver.edu
Please note the required textbooks and tentative assignments.
Every week I will activate the hyperlink for that week's
assignments. Please read syllabus for due date criteria if not
stated on the assignment sheets. I will make electronic copies
of handouts and have them available via hyperlinks on the current
week's assignment page.
Read the assigned chapters and check the discussion link before
Thursdays to comment on the posted questions. Participation
points can be earned by thoughtful responses in context of the
assigned reading and personal experiences to posted questions. Note:
For the first week this will not be completed and activated until
Wednesday.
Email your response papers and assignment papers to me as a WORD
attachment only. Title the document with Week number, assignment
number, and author of the book you worked in. Please do not cut and paste into emails unless we
talk about it first. If you do not have WORD, go to the
library and check it out and install it into your computer. Do
not send Zip files, and only one document per email. I will
not accept any assignments after the due date and time.

Announcements
The following was posted on December 12, 2002: I
have to say, I am completely astounded by your efforts and successes
in our Leadership Conference. Many of you made excellent
suggestions for next time, thank you for your input. I think
many of you astounded yourselves too! I am very happy for your
success. It was my personal goal to increase your self efficacy,
esteem, and confidence that you can do something like this.
The Covey book was assigned to teach you personal leadership and the
Rothwell to teach you group dynamics. The final result of the
successful conference showed that you absorbed and practiced these
principles. Excellent effort and production!
Would each of you take the time to respond the the final question
on the discussion page?
Best wishes to all of you and may you all find personal success
and happiness!
Sincerely,
Rod Mattson
