Course Home Page Calendar Assignments List Announcements Presenting Information Unit NARRATIVE: Most of us, at some point in our lives, will have to give a speech or present information to a group of people. It could be at school, at work, at church, almost anywhere. For some people, public speaking comes naturally with very little nervousness. However, for most of us the idea of getting up in front of a group is absolutely terrifying! As part of this class, you will each be given the opportunity to give a "speech" – and all of us will be evaluating each other’s efforts. Your presentations will be given on Thursday, February 5, 2004. We will meet in RLC, room 131. We will begin promptly at 7:00 pm. All students need to stay for the entire meeting as you will be expected to perform peer evaluations on the other presentations. This presentation is the equivalent of an exam and is worth 100 points. If you choose to leave early, you will forfeit 10 points off your score. Your speech can be on any topic you want – it could be on how to eat an Oreo cookie, how to make pasta, nutrition, physical fitness, technology, how to shop, how to save money, -- any topic you want. You do have to speak for at least 3 minutes and no more than 5. You may not use PowerPoint for your speech-we used to do that and students tended to 'hide' behind the slides and just read them rather than really giving a speech. You can use an overhead for a transparency if you'd like - but please let me know so I can arrange for a projector. If you are going to need anything copied (i.e. for handouts), you need to get the material to me at least 1 week ahead of time so I can arrange for the print shop to make the copies. You can email files electronically or you can put paper copies in my mail box. My mail box is in BI-16. In an effort to help you prepare for this assignment – I’d like to provide some tips on both preparing for and giving presentations. What you need to do now is to open the web page, "How to Prepare a Presentation."
