Felix Serna has been a full time
drafting instructor at Green River Community
College since 1990. He began his career in the
drafting profession in 1967 working as an intern
for a tool storage design firm while attending
the Industrial Design Program at Mt. San Antonio
Community College in Walnut California.
He worked full time as a civil drafter with
the United States Air Force for four years.
After serving, he continued his education in
Technical Illustration at Clover Park Vocational
School in Tacoma Washington. After completing
the program he went to work for Boeing as a
Production Illustrator. He continued his education
while working full time and earned degrees in
Business and Art at Steilacoom Community College.
Felix left Boeing after a couple of years
to work as a drafter and commercial artist.
Since then he has worked as a mechanical drafter,
mechanical designer, illustrator, and technical
artist for a variety of different companies.
The type of industries he has been involved
with includes the following:
- Design of wood products manufacturing
equipment
- Design of material handling equipment
- Design of maintenance equipment for
construction projects and commercial buildings
- Design of testing equipment for aerospace
Felix enjoys teaching in a profession that
is in constant change. Drafting has taken quantum
leaps with the advent of the computer and the
changes that are occurring throughout the various
industries. He stresses that one must become
a life long learner, education doesn’t end after
leaving school, your real education begins on
your first job.
Felix is a Certified Drafter and a member
of ADDA (American Design Drafting Association).
He is the recipient of the GRCC Distinguished
Faculty Award and Excellence in Teaching awarded
by the Washington Association of Occupational
Educators.
