  1. The lab report for Lab 9: Hess's Law:  Hand in with portfolio # 3 which is due at the start of the final exam, Thursday 12/12/13 in SC-323.

  2. Portfolio #3 is due at the start of the final exam on Thursday 12/12/13

  3. Chem 161 Final Exam:

    • Final Exam Review Session: 10-12 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 10 in SC-323  Bring questions and topics that you would like discussed/reviewed. (Attendance strongly suggested, but optional!!)  Click here for the Final Exam Study Guide and Practice Problems!

    • Final Exam Date and Time:

      • Sec. D: 10 a.m. to 12 noon,  Thursday 12/12/13 in SC-323

    • Bring a Scantron card as the exam will be part multiple choice and part short answer/essay. The final exam is comprehensive, covering chapters 1-6 and all labs performed during the quarter. However, nearly half of the questions will be on material covered since exam 2 (i.e. chapters 5-6, ALE's 20-28). If it helps your grade, your lowest midterm exam score will be replaced with the percentage that you earn on the final exam. 

    • Don't forget to bring to the final exam portfolio #3 and a well-rested mind and body!

  4. Exam #2 is almost here! The exam will be administered outside of class time in the GRCC testing center in the Zgolinski Welcome Center. You have the choice of taking exam #2 on Wednesday 11/13 or Thursday 11/14 (your choice), but we will still meet for class as normally scheduled on these days.  Although there is not a time limit, you should budget two hours for the exam so you will not be rushed for time.     • Wednesday 11/14/12 (Testing Center Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) OR

    • Thursday 11/15/12 (Testing Center Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

      • Picture I.D.

      • Non-programable calculator

      • Pencil(s) and eraser

      • A well rested body and mind!

  1. Caution!!!  Exam #1 is next week!!!

    Start memorizing as soon as possible...

    • the symbol and name of each element on page 6 of ALE 9

    • the name, formula and charge of each ion on page 7 of ALE 9

     

    Exam #1 is on Thursday Oct. 17 and will be administered in our classroorm, SC-323

    Bring the following with you to the exam:

    • Portfolio #1 (click here for a portfolio 1 contents sheet)

    • Non-programmable calculator (programmable calculators are not allowed)

    • Scantron Card (in new condition with no "dog ears")

    • #2 pencil(s)

    • Good eraser

    • A well-rested body and mind!!

    Exam #1 consists of two parts:

    • Part 1 (~30 points):  ~10 multiple choice questions

    • Part 2 (~70 points).  ~10 questions involving the analysis of data, calculations and chemical nomenclature

  1. Lab 1. How Can the Density of a Substance be Determined Accurately and Precisely: 

    • The  report for Lab 1 is due on Wednesday, 10/02/13, but complete as much of it as possible before coming to class on Tuesday 10/02/12.

    • See the Lab Notebook Policy handout and the Lab 1 handout for specific requirements for writing a lab report.

    • The theoretical results are posted at the lab section of the class website. Use the theoretical results to calculate the % error for the results that you and your lab partner obtained for activities 1 - 3. Class results for lab 1 will be postedafter class on Monday 9/30/13.

You must print them from the class website (but please print them double sided). It might be simplest (and cheaper!!) to print on campus since double sided printing is the default setting at GRCC.

Welcome to Chem 161! I'm looking to an exciting quarter and getting to know you! Please pay careful attention to the announcements below.

  1. Please skim through the Fall 2013 Chem 161 course syllabus to learn about class expectations, policies, etc. (Please do not print the syllabus as it will be handed out on the first day of class.)

  2. Purchase ASAP, but no later than Sunday 9/22/2013

    • Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change, 6th edition by Martin S. Silberberg, McGraw-Hill. Earlier editions are okay to use, but page numbers may be a bit different and may not be suitable if you have another instructor for Chem& 162 and 163.

    •  Labs and Active Learning Exercises (ALE's)Print them from the class website (but please print them double sided). It might be simplest and cheaper to print on campus since double sided printing is the default setting at GRCC.

    • Student Lab Notebook with Spiral Binding: 100 Carbonless Duplicate Sets. Hayden-McNeil publishers (available at the GRCC bookstore!!)
